Pecora Nera® fabrics are created exclusively from the fleece of dark Merino sheep that have been carefully selected at a New Zealand farm, an initiative that has restored dignity and significance to these special sheep following the discovery that black was the breed’s original color. White sheep have historically dominated the selective breeding process based on the fact that it was possible to dye white wool in a wider range of colors. The darker color remained as a secondary genetic trait in some white sheep. Pecora Nera® is a lustrous and resistant wool with a natural color ranging from brown mélange to black. Loro Piana began the exclusive acquisition of dark New Zealand wool some years ago, inspiring the creation of a rarely-seen before variety of un-dyed fabrics with natural patterns created solely by the unique range of warm shades of black Merino wool.
