• Style and shape - The tie model

As you may already know or noticed, ties vary in width and length. This may sound trivial but dimensions that form the tie’s model are of a great importance in the way a pattern can seem proper or outdated. 

The length can be anything from 140 cm to 160 cm - with our suggestion of a lenght of 148/150cm that fits well most heights and body types after knotted. The width is equally important and changes more often in respect to length as it is associated with trends in menswear. A common idea is that the width of the tie should follow the width of the jacket’s lapel. No wonder the classic tie has an 8cm pointed tip width and that is also the classic width measurement in a man’s jacket’s lapel. Ties can be as wide as 11 cm, but also as thin as 5 cm, with actual trends to vary between 7 to 7.5 cm.

• Fabric / Design - The tie pattern

A reason we suggest this category is that there are two basic weaving processes to fabrics suitable for ties. These are the jacquard and printed ties.  Jacquard fabrics are made through weave and weft techniques that tend to form subtle patterns such as plains, stripes or pois and checks. Traditional qualities include silk and blends of silk, wool and linen. This is to say, we refer to high quality garments and not any cheap offer of polyester ties.

The printed fabrics are usually fabrics of silk, or blends, or wool in winter and linen in summer. The printing procedure applied, results in great depth patterns and lively colours of any theme of inspiration.  In general, jacquard ties tend to look more formal while printed ties somehow more fashionable. Obviously, there are trends that alternate the dominance of each of these categories.  

Selecting men’s ties by occasion 

Given the choice of colors and fabrics, sometimes it’s right to select a tie according to the occasion and each’s personal taste.

The classic silks

For all occasions, from the most formal such as a wedding or a dinner party, to the most casual such as a night out, wearing a handmade silk tie you can’t go wrong .

When it comes to a formal occasion such as attending weddings and ceremonies many opt for dark shade suits like navy blue and black. In this case we suggest going for a similar or even darker shade tie to match with a white shirt. That’s true elegance!

Apart from obvious plains, consider trying a micro patterned tie that retains an elegant attitude but also enlightens the whole outfit.  

Obviously a silk tie is also very appropriate to your everyday work or office attire.

Popular patterns include the regimental striped ties. The regimental ties are not considered to be seasonal and between highs and lows represent an evergreen choice. Others such as small patterned prints and jacquard crowns can be sophisticated alternatives. 

The blends and the knitted ties

If for you a silk tie looks a bit too formal, perhaps you can try a tie made of  cotton and linen in summer and wool in winter. These fabrics are now a more original option and certainly of a more casual taste. They grow popular due to the fact that many men choose separates (jacket and trousers) or flannel suits.

Another niche option is the knitted tie, a sophisticated type of tie made by either silk or woolen knits. Its use is versatile varying from formal attire to smart casual ones.
